I remember years ago
When I was very small
Indoor plumbing was very scarce
Many did not have it at all.
A sponge bath was very common
A bucket with dipper we had
A basin upon a table
Home made soap made us very glad.
A china bowl and pitcher
In the bed room a luxury to behold
A chamber pot was very necessary
Made us happy in days of old.
My goodness what would we do today
If we went back to that day and time
The days were so much happier then
And the memories are all mine.
Rain barrels at each back corner
Of our house to catch the rain
If you didn't have a pump outside
Catching water could be a pain.
Washing clothes in a galvanized tub
With a scrub board in tow
A close line standing very close by
Where clothes in the wind would blow.
Mama in her apron
Aroma of home made bread
Pot belly stove to keep us warm
Home made quilts lay on the bed.
A radio was our entertainment
No telephone or TV at all
Neighbors visited each other
What a joy when they would call.
Most people had a garden
Raised chickens and live stock you know
We walked most places that we went
Drive to town now and then we would go.
We didn't have lots of money
But we shared our families love
Happy was my growing years
I thank my Lord above.
So if you think life's is good now
My friend you do not know
How wonderful life really was
Many years ago.
