~All Alone~

Back then I would get mad and shout
"Why don't you children just grow up
and act your age?"

I should have known they would and they did...

Or, "Go outside and find something to do

and don't slam that door."

And they did that too...

I would straighten up their bedrooms nice and neat.  Clothes picked up, pop bottles and chip bags in the trash, toys nicely tucked away and I would yell . "Now it had better stay this way."

And it has...

I would fix a perfect dinner with mash potatoes nibbled on and half gone, a cake
with finger prints in the icing and I would
say "Now look what you have done.  Don't you dare do that again."

And now they don't...

I would yell I'm on the phone so "Shut up
and no screaming do you hear me?

No one answer...

No more tablecloths stained
No more buttercup bouquets
No more iron-on patches
No more broken shoelaces,
muddy shoes or rubber bands for ponytails.

Imagine.....the whole house so perfect,
No worrying about school grades,
Washing clothes only once a week!

No PTA meetings or silly school plays,
participating in various sports,
Loud stereos or forgotten lunch money.

No more Christmas presents made
with love in the classroom,
No wet kisses,
No more tooth fairy,
No more giggles in the dark,
Scraped knees to kiss
Or sticky fingers to clean.

Only a voice asking
"WHY DON'T YOU GROW UP?"

And the silent echoes:

"I did."
